Filter media does two different jobs and it pays to know which one you are buying. Coarse, open material is mechanical — it catches solids and is meant to be hosed out regularly. Finer and higher-surface-area media is biological, home to the bacteria that convert ammonia and nitrite, and should be disturbed as little as possible.
