Filter media does two different jobs and it pays to know which one you are buying. Coarse, open material is mechanical — it catches solids and is meant to be hosed out regularly. Finer and higher-surface-area media is biological, home to the bacteria that convert ammonia and nitrite, and should be disturbed as little as possible. Cleaning your biological media in tap water is the most common way a healthy pond is accidentally reset to zero.
